Movie Quick Take: Cold Creek Manor

Let me preface this by saying that the trailer was fantastic, it showed a creepy house and strange goings on, implying a supernatural presence. What we actually get is a tepid, dull, uninteresting tale of a man who just wants his house. Surprising that somebody would see that description and think that anyone would actually want to see it!

The story follows Quaid and Stone as the decide to leave the city for the country, once they get there, they buy this old house. As it turns out, this house is owned by recently released from prison bad boy Stephen Dorff. Now all he wants is to get his house back, so we are treated to 2 hours of him trying to drive out Quaid and crew. We see things like snakes in the house, stories about slaughtering cows, and a dead horse in the pool. Any way you slice it, the movie is as pedestrian as they come. It's populated by boring characters, and it's story is driven by contrivance and nothing else.

A movie this bad doesn't deserve the quality trailer it had. I only stayed through it because I hoped that it would get better, but it never did. Dennis Quaid had one expression throughout the entire film, bug eyed. Sharon Stone was sadly wasted here, this role was clearly not meant for her, she is meant for stronger female characters, not the simpering wife she was reduced to here. Then we have Stephen Dorff, must say that I am not terribly familiar with many of his movies. He was entertaining in the B-movie Space Truckers, and was effective as the menacing Frost in Blade II, but here he is flat and lifeless, almost a caricature of a menacing character. There was no motivation behind him other than wanting the house. In the end, all I can hope for is that you pass this by on the shelves in favor of a better suspense film like Frailty or Insomnia.
