TV: 2004 Fall Schedues

The networks have announced their Fall schedules. Nothing that exciting, except it appears that Alias and 24 won't be returning to the airwaves until 2005! What's that all about? Two of my favorite shows and you're going to make me wait?!? Probably to fit in more reality tv. Anyway, here's a look at what we have to look forward too.

Fox: They're giving us three, yes three, different schedules. One starting in June, one this Fall, and finally one for January. I'm not sure if the summer schedule includes re-runs or not, but they are debuting some new shows.
June '04:
Sunday's are still anchored by King of the Hill, The Simpsons, and Malcolm in the Middle. The excellent Arrested Development is moved to the 8:30 slot, I hope people watch this show, it is one of the best sitcoms on. There is one newcomer here, the Andy Richter sitcom Quintuplets. I hope this is good, but it's no replacement for the hilarious Andy Richter Controls the Universe.
Monday gives us North Shore, I've seen commercials for this and I don't think this is for me, also there is The Casino, this may be interesting, doubt I'll like it as much as NBC's Las Vegas.
Tuesday's there is the moved, again, Bernie Mac Show, which I thought had a good fit when it was on Sunday after the Simpsons. We are also graced with Method and Red starring Method Man and Redman, I don't really have high expectations for this. Finally there is The Jury, eh, don't really care for court room shows.
Wednesday looks like re-runs and reality, move along.
Thursday has Tru Calling, which really started coming into it's own towards the end of its first season.
Friday's and Saturdays, nothing interesting. And thus concludes the June lineup.

2004 Fall Lineup: This schedule shuffles some things around.
Sunday is relatively unchanged with King of the Hill, The Simpsons, Arrested Development, and Malcolm in the Middle. They add reality show The Partner, no thanks.
Monday Nothing worth watching with The North Shore and The Swan 2(can't believe they're giving us more of this!)
Tuesday has The Billionaire, nah, and House which appears to be possibly entertaining about a Doctor who doesn't like speaking to his patients.
Wednesday is comedy night, anchored by favorite That 70s Show and the again moved Bernie Mac Show, around that are Quintuplets and Method and Red.
Thursday brings us The OC, never got into this 90210 rehash, and Tru Calling, give this one a shot, you may like it.
Fridays and Saturday's are still worthless.

And finally, the January '05 lineup.
Sunday stays the same but adds bookends with The Kelsey Grammar Sketch Show, no interest from me, sketch comedy is dying. Also adds American Dad from the creator of Family Guy, this intrigues me, Family Guy was an absolute riot, looking forward to seeing how this matches up.
Monday starts with Athens, from the creator of OC, leads me to believe I won't care for it. We also have the return of 24 on a new night, how they'll cram in all 24 episodes, I have no idea, but I will be glad to see it back on TV.
Tuesday has American idol, don't get me started, and House.
Wednesday remains anchored by That 70's Show and Bernie Mac, and squeezes in more American Idol, and Related By Family, a comedy about slackers in a food court, sounds promising.
Thursday remains unchanged.
Friday finally gives something that may be worth watching. We have The Inside, which is about an FBI agent undercover in a high school, and Jonny Zero about an ex-con who uses his underworld contacts to fight crime.
Saturday, still nothing.

Don't know why they gave 3 different lineups, but I guess we'll see if this really pans out.

The WB is up next, and they're overall schedule appears pretty weak.
Sunday doesn't bring anything interesting anchored by the always mediocre Charmed, why this is still on I'll never know. Also One Tree Hill, Steve Harvey's Big Time, and newcomers The Mountain and Jack & Bobby.
Monday has 7th Heaven and Everwood, two more shows that don't interest me.
Tuesday has Gilmore Girls, which I hear is excellent but haven't yet sampled. Plus what I'm guessing is a repeat of One Tree Hill
Next up is Wednesday. Here we get the best show on their schedule the fantastic coming of age story about Superman, Smallville. We also get a couple new comedy shows featuring Jeff Foxworthy, Blue Collar TV, and Drew Carey, Drew Carey's Green Screen.
Thursday gives us a rerun of The Mountain, and more reality tv with Studio7. I'll pass.
Friday Is comedy night with nothing special. I used to like Grounded for Life, but that sank pretty quick. How can a show like this be saved a network from cancellation, when good shows get dropped in the blink of an eye?
Saturday has nothing scheduled. Probably for the best.

Now for another weak schedule: UPN. They only schedule programs Monday-Friday, nothing for the weekends, and like the WB, probably for the best.
Monday brings us a line-up of comedies which don't have me for a target audience. Let's move along.
Tuesday has some more comedies, and one show that looks like it has some possibility, Veronica Mars about a teenager exposing the dark side of her town.
Wednesday reality TV and another lawyer show. No thanks.
Thursday has their best program, in my opinion anyway, WWE Smackdown. Being a wrestling fan, this makes UPN watchable.
Friday starts with reality TV, and a show that experienced a turn around in quality this season and is moving to a new day and time, Enterprise.

And now for the big 3.

CBS is up first.
Sunday has the old standby 60 Minutes and the new hit Cold Case. Cold Case is a good show, but I haven't kept up on it, maybe this season I will.
Monday remains a comedy night anchored by the final season of Everybody Loves Raymond, popular but never really stood out to me. I am looking forward to the new Jason Alexander series Listen Up. We also have the return of CSI: Miami, good show, but I just don't care for David Caruso.
Tuesday brings back NCIS which is a pretty good procedural show. Also get the debut of Clubhouse about a boy becoming a batboy. Next.
Wednesday Not much, more 60 Minutes and a couple of comedies. We also get the debut of CSI: New York starring Gary Sinise, I hope this is good.
Thursday yet another Survivor, and a favorite of mine, CSI, also the returning Without a Trace, another decent show I didn't follow on a regular basis.
Friday has the excellent Joan of Arcadia, I am very glad this show is coming back, it was one of the better debuts last season. Also, debuting this year is dr.vegas with Rob Lowe and Joe Pantoliano about a doctor who works in a casino, interesting premise, I didn't know casinos had doctors?
Saturday yields nothing of note for me.

ABC Looks to have some decent shows.
Sunday Reality TV, primetime soaps, and The Practice spin off. Nothing for me.
Monday more reality and football. Fumble!
Tuesday generic comedies and NYPD Blue. Still nothing for me.
Wednesday provides more reality TV, but a bright spot is Lost from the creator of Alias. A show about survivors of a plane crash on a strange Island.
Thursday, more reality TV, and a teen drama about a trio of high schoolers.
Friday Another night of comedies. Again, nothing stands out.
Saturday returns with The Wonderful World of Disney.

Lastly we have NBC
Sunday is ruled by dramas, only 1 interests me, Crossing Jordan. An entertaining medical drama-lite.
Monday returns Fear Factor, no thanks. Also Las Vegas, which I really enjoy. Debuting will be the new Heather Locklear series, the suspense show LAX, which looks like it may be good.
Tuesday brings still more reality tv. Then there is the new animated comedy, Father of the Pride, and the return of TV's best sitcom, Scrubs. Closing the night is Law & Order: SVU, my favorite of the L&O series.
Wednesday still anchored by The West Wing, the long running political drama which holds no interest for me. There is the new crime series Hawaii, which looks to try to survive with a new location, may be interesting. Then the long running Law and Order.
Thursday Anchored by a favorite of mine, ER, will be led off by the Friends spin off, Joey. I pray this is good, I really like the character. In between is Will & Grace, why was this funny again? and the return of The Apprentice.
Friday Dateline, Third Watch, and Medical Investigation. The only one interesting to me could possibly be Medical Investigation, we'll see.
Saturday Apprentice reruns and a movie.

Well, that concludes my look at the upcoming schedules. Over all it seems pretty week, especially with the conspicuous absence of Alias and 24 until mid-season. All of the shows ending this year are really leaving a big whole in the schedule, there just doesn't seem to be enough good stuff to go around. Anyway, I'll be back with what I'll most likely be watching and/or taping next year. Stay tuned!
