TV Review: Fraser Series Finale

I must admit, I haven't watched a full episode of Frasier in years. My interest for some reason just dropped like a stone, I think it was when Frasier moved away from the Must See TV lineup. The writing seemed to go downhill, it got sort of sappy and tried to be too clever and not quite work. Anyway, I figured I would tune in to see how it turned out, as it was I taped it and just finished watching it a couple days late. Something else I should be up front about, is that I am not up to speed on the current stories, they weren't hard to figure out, but that may have tainted my opinion.

The evening started out similar to the Friends finale, with a clip show. Creatively, this one worked better. I liked how they put Frasier Crane on the couch as a patient, using his memories and issues as a method to bring out the clips. This proved a good way to catch me up on some more recent events, as well as remind me of how witty it had once been. This went on for a bout an hour, the meat of the program began, the actual finale.

OK, the stories playing out here, as I can pick them out, are 1. Frasier and his girlfriend parting ways as she takes a new job, 2. Marty Crane is getting married, and 3. Niles and Daphne are awaiting the arrival of their child. The story follows Frasier and Niles as they frantically try to plan their father's wedding. Of course, nothing goes as planned, especially with Daphne's brothers around. Everything that needs to be done for a finale is done here, the wedding, the birth of the child, and of course, a way of ending the show with hope for the future.

The resolutions work well, unlike friends, the main characters here are family, meaning there isn't as much pull to move everybody away. So Marty gets married, the child is born in comical fashion at a veterinary hospital, and Frasier moves away. I was wondering how they were going to end this, apparently Frasier is now going to host a televised show in San Francisco.

I enjoyed Friends more, but what we got here had a lot less cheese spread over it. It was a good finale to a long running show, showed a nice degree of class, yet still had some slapstick in it. But in the end, I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other to the ending of the series. But for the fans this was a nice cap.

On a Frasier sidenote. Prior to watching this episode, I had read that Kelsey Grammer wants to resurrect Dr.Frasier Crane in another television series. All I can say is Enough is enough! Then I wondered how they would end the series that would leave it open for another series. My question was answered as I saw them move him to San Francisco. And as I thought about it some, I don't think Grammer has anything else left in him. He's played the same character for the past 20 years. Nothing else he has done has been of any real note, I truly believe he is a one trick pony. Here's a prediction (For entertainment purposes only!), Grammer doesn't get another series and other work is dry, as there is some backlash about the character, he writes a book entitled I Am Not Frasier (ala Leonard Nimoy's I Am Not Spock). A few years later, money is going away, he reconciles with the fans and writes I Am Frasier (ala Nimoy's I Am Spock). Obviously this probably won't happen, but it popped into my heard and struck me as humorous.
