New Releases

We have a bunch of new releases to get to today. I also apologize for this being a little bit later than usual.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. This is the one I have been waiting for. A truly unique looking science fiction film. This looks like nothing else that has hit the screens in recent years. Just judging from the commercials and trailers it looks like a science fiction film from the 1950's, it has that look as if frozen in time, even the soft focus evokes thoughts of that era. Starring Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie, this is almost an animated film as it was shot entirely against a blue screen. Can't wait.

Wimbledon. Starring Paul Bettany and Kirsten Dunst in a new sports romance film based around, the tennis tourney of the title. I liked the trailers, it looks like a fun movie. Paul Bettany is a good actor, who refers to himself as a "Cheaper than Jude Law" is due for a breakout.

Mr. 3000. Bernie Mac in the second of the sports films this weekend, stars as a baseball player who comes out of retirement to get a few more hits. I like Mac, his television show is funny, he has an easy going charm on screen that can also be tough. This may turn out to be decent.

Before Sunset. A sequel to a 1995 film that wasn't a big budget action extravaganza, or a high grossing comedy, how often does that happen? Director Richard Linklater reunites the stars of Before Sunrise, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. They play the same characters who run into each other again 9 years after their first encounter. I did not see the first, but I may check it out, they both look like entertaining movies.

National Lampoon's Gold Diggers. What can I say? This looks pretty bad from the couple of commercials I've seen. A couple of losers marry a couple of older women in hopes of inheriting their money. I think I'll pass.

De-Lovely. I know this opened awhile ago, but it is just now making it to my neck of the woods. The bio-pic of Cole Porter starring Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd in addition to an eclectic group of musicians performing Porter's music, including Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, and Alanis Morrisette. The reviews have been either loving it or hating it, not much of a middle ground. Not generally my cup of tea, but I may check it out.
