Movie Quick Take: Ray

This was one of the better movies I have seen this year, and Jamie Foxx gives another great performance. Foxx is quickly on his way to the A-list following this, and his turn in Collateral. Taylor Hackford has given us a wonderful insight into the world and music of Ray Charles. It is my understanding that Ray, himself, was on set for a lot of the production, which I am sure went a long wsay towards helping the authenticity.

The film follows the development of Ray's career starting in the late 1940's and taking us through to the 1960's. We see the struggles he goes through, the addictions, the home life. I had no idea about what he went through. Even if you aren't a fan of his music, this film tells a fascinating story. I can't claim to be a fan of Ray's music, but I can't deny the greatness there, an original sound and voice emerged from him.

A little bit more about the acting. Jamie Foxx was unbelievable as Charles. He had all of he body language down, and it is surprising how much alike they really look. There is a lot of video footage of Ray throughout his life, so we know how he moved, and Foxx was, to put it simply, amazing. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the rest of the ensemble. They may not be stealing every scene they touch like Foxx does, but they admirably fill their supporting roles giving life to the film.

Bottomline. This is a wonderful movie about a great original voice on the music landscape. The film is a geat tribute showing the troubles he went through bringing that greatness to us.

Highly Recommended.
