New Releases for 12/3/04

Believe it or not, there are no big releases this weekend. There are a few opening in limited release, one of which I will write about in a little bit. I can't remember the last time that there was a weekend without at least one national release. That is going to make this post rather short.

There are two films opening at the local arthouse:
Lightning in a Bottle. I saw a trailer for this, and it looks pretty good. It is a onstage/offstage documentary, a tribute to the blues. It was filmed at Radio City Music Hall and directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). It features appearances by Natalie Cole, BB King, Robert Cray, Chuck D, Vernon Reid, Bonnie Raitt, Steven Tyler, among many others.

School Board Blues. This one is a docu-memoir about the Indian mascot controversy in Onteora, NY back in 2000. There was apparently a lot more going on than a political battle involving tire slashings and anti-Semitic writing, all of which made for national news coverage. This could be interesting. It is only playing for one showing.

Lastly a movie for all who can see. It is only opening in New York and Los Angeles, I can only hope for a wider release to come down the line. The movie is House of Flying Daggers. It is director Zhang Yimou's follow up to the incredible Hero. It stars Takeshi Kaneshiro, Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs, Running on Karma), and Zhang Ziyi (Hero, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). I am not sure what the story concerns, but it looks amazing, and I hope to get the chance to see it on the big screen. If any of you dedicated readers do get a chance to see it, please drop a line here and let me know what you thought of it.
