Movie Quick Take: Robots

Robots. I was really looking forward to seeing this and I think the expectations I had for it ultimately led to my disappointment. First the good. The animation and details are spectacular. The shine on the new robots, the dull "outmodes," all of the rivets and various grades of metal and little background details look great. There is also the trip along the crossway express, which is sort of like a CG version of the game mousetrap with all sorts of action happening, completely nonsensical, but visually impressive. The story, on the other hand, and more specifically how it progresses, is a problem. The tale unfolds an extremely rapid pace which never fully allows us to latch onto the characters, I just really had no feeling for them, the motion was way too fast. The core of the story is positive and admirable, but it should have been slowed down a bit. The voice acting is OK, but Robin Williams brings the proceedings down. Apparently, he was given free reign in his creation of the robot, and that is the last thing that was really needed. Williams is an incredibly funny and talented man, but in cases like this he needs a director to pull the reigns in and give him some focus. There are some enjoyable segments, and it is head and shoulders aboveShark Tale. Mildly Recommended.
