New Movie Releases

Only two national releases this week, and one of them opened yesterday! There are also three films coming to the indie theater for various length runs. Let's see what we have to work with.

Guess Who? The pseudo-remake of the Sidney Poitier classic Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? This time starring Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher. I have not read any early reviews or anything regarding this one, but I predict mostly middle of the road reviews, but I am hoping for the best, I like Bernie Mac, and Kutcher has shown potential. I guess we can only wait and see what happens.

Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous. Did we really need this sequel? If you go by the reviews that have been coming out, the answer would have to be no. In some cases the need for the original is questioned. In any case, I recently rewatched the original, and found myself really enjoying it. It is a light hearted, inoffensive funny little film, and starring Sandra Bullock doesn't hurt! The commercials for this make it look pretty funny, so I am willing to give it a shot, are you?

Nobody Knows. This film hails from Japan and is based on a true story. It tells the tale of four children in Tokyo who were abandoned by their mother and must learn to fend for themselves. I saw a trailer for this and it looked very good. It was directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, who has received high praise for the performances he got from the children, the oldest even won the Grand Prize for acting at Cannes. I hope to get a chance to see this.

In the Realms of the Unreal. I believe this is a documentary, at least in part. It is about Henry Darger and his abundant artwork, a tale of angels. There is some animation and voice over throughout. I have never heard of this film, nor it's subject, but it sounds rather interesting. This having a limited 3 day/5 show run.

Maya. This comes from India and is about a specific form of child abuse that has its roots in tradition, and engenders despair in those involved. I have an idea what this is about, although the description I read does not come right out and say it, and neither shall I. I'll just say it may be an interesting film, but I am not sure I wish to see it. This is having a 2 day/2 show run.

That is it for this week. Enjoy your week at the cinema!
