DVD Pick of the Week.

First thing I can tell you this week is what will not be, that is Darkness. That was an absolutely horrendous film, and I do not think that any amount of "Unrated Edition"-ness can help this mess of a movie. Secondly, I can tell you what comes out on top of the pile, and that is a film which some people have the same feelings for that I had for Darkness. I guess I should just come out and tell you what the movie is, it is Blade: Trinity.

The third film in the series which I feel went a long way in helping to reinvigorate the comic book movie. When the first one came out, it was a surprise hit, big action, some decent blood, and a lot of fun. This one is a bit different than that original film, incorporating a lot of comedy and giving Blade a team to play with. I don't think I could go so far as to call this a good film, but it is a lot of fun, and a good debut for David Goyer as director. Goyer, who wrote all three films and also the upcoming Batman film, has more than proven himself adept at adapting comic to film, now shows that he can direct too.

I like the teaming of Wesley Snipes, Ryan Reynolds, and Jessica Biel. Snipes is very good as Blade, a rather monotone hero. Reynolds injects most of the humor as ex-vampire lackey Hannibal King. And Jessica Biel steps into a the exact opposite type of character of what she played in Texas Chainsaw Massacre ('04). The main complaint would have to be Dominic Purcell as a rather flat villain in Drake. And let us not forget the big screen debut of WWE wrestler Triple H. In the end this movie is a blast, and I recommend it, and this has an unrated cut, which will hopefully add more fun to the mix.

Other titles to be aware of:
  • Anthology of Surreal Cinema Vol. 1. This looks interesting, a collection of surreal cinema from the silent era.
  • The Assassination of Richard Nixon. I don't know much about this film, but I hear that Sean Penn puts on a great performance in it as a man on the edge.
  • Chop Socky: Cinema Hong Kong. A documentary on the history and influence of martial arts films.
  • Cursed. A Japanese horror film which looks to be much better than the American film of the same title (no they are not related).
  • Darkness. Next.
  • F for Fake: The Criterion Collection. An Orson Welles film with which I am not familiar with, I will have to look into this.
  • Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. This is a fun movie with absolutely gorgeous set design. It does get a finger of shame for the dual release of 1 disk and 2 disk sets with a huge difference in price.
  • Leonard Part 6. Who can forget this Bill Cosby classic?
  • Undertow. Another film I hear is great, yet I have no seen it.
  • Wild Things 3: Diamonds in the Rough. Who thought that there should be a second, much less a third?

That's it for this week. Hopefully something you'll like.
