New Movie Releases: 6/10

This week brings us a pretty good selection of films. At least good enough to tide us over until Batman Begins opens next week. Let's see what the big screen gods are offering this week.

The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3D. Robert Rodriguez's next film is another family film and his second 3-D release. It revolves around a boy who tells stories of a boy who lives with the sharks and a girl who is literally hot, no one believes his tales, until the duo show up in seek of his help to save their home. It may be interesting, but I am not terribly interested in wearing the red and blue glasses.

High Tension. Originally titled Haute Tension in it's native France, and Switchblade Romance in England, this horror film finally makes it's way to the States. I am very much looking forward to it, I have heard it is a pretty hardcore horror flick. Sadly I also have heard that it had to undergo a little trimming to obtain an R rating, avoiding the NC-17. I have not heard, however, if it is subtitled or dubbed, I did read once that it was a combination. I hope it's subbed.

The Honeymooners. What can I say? I have seen a few trailers, and I am less than impressed. I like Cedric, not so much Mike Epps. I have no problems with the idea of remaking old films and television shows and the like, but I also expect that a little respect be shown. And sadly, I really don't get the impression that there is much respect here, I hope I'm wrong. It just does not look all that good to me.

Mr & Mrs. Smith. This looks like a lot of fun. It looks like an outlandish over the top actioner. On top of that it looks to rely more on practical effects than CG, and that is a relief. I believe that this is another adaptation of the story that Alfred Hitchcock brought to the big screen in a film having the same name. This was directed by Doug Liman, who last directed the excellent The Bourne Identity. I just hope that the movie can outlast the Pitt/Jolie tabloid saga.

Bride & Prejudice. This one skipped the first run theaters and has gone straight to second run. Regardless of that, I will be seeing this. It will be my first exposure to a Bollywood type film. It will also be my first exposure to the stunning Aishwarya Rai, she looks absolutely gorgeous and has been called the most beautiful woman in the world. The film is a version of the Jane Austen tale Pride and Prejudice. It had good word of mouth, I will need to see if it holds up.
Ladies in Lavender. A film I am not terribly interested in seeing, but seems interesting nonetheless. It concerns two elderly women, played by Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, who find a young man washed up on the shore near their home. He turns out to be a beautiful violinist who attracts the attention of a Russian woman. It is described as a love story that involves paranoia and politics.

Brothers. This looks fascinating. A story of two opposite brothers, one the ex-con troublemaker, the other in control, family, career, he is doing well. Soon the good brother is sent to Afghanistan, where his helicopter crashes and he is presumed dead. The other brother steps up to take care of the the family, but the feelings between brother and sister-in-law take a turn, but the other brother isn't dead....

JSA: Joint Security Area. I have had this on DVD for quite some time, and it is a wonderful film, now I get to see it on the big screen. It's a shame they are only giving it two screenings. It was directed by Chan Wook Park (Oldboy). It takes place in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, a few of the soldiers have become friends despite being on opposite sides, gunshots ring out and two North Korean soldiers are dead. What follows is a tight thriller told in flashback fashion. For those who are not familiar with Asian film, this is a good one to begin your initiation with, it is very accessible to Western audiences, and may whet your appetite for more from the East.

Until next week!
