The Trailer Park: Cry Wolf

Yeah, another teen slasher film. Sorry I don't sound more excited, but this genre is so stale right now, I think the Scream trilogy helped to kill it, partially because the original film was good and spawned so many sub-par knock offs. It seems to be harder and harder to make a good horror film, what with the self aware teen slashers and proliferation of J-horror in recent years.

I have seen two trailers for this so far, the initial teaser and, more recently a full trailer. I must admit to liking the concept, and of the two trailers I think the first teaser is more interesting, giving us a glimpse of what is going on. The second trailer is good at giving us a better view of what it is about, but the first is a little sneakier in portraying it.

The plot of Cry Wolf surrounds a group of kids embarking on an elaborate prank. They "invent" a killer and send anonymous emails to classmates about the victims. The problem is the tables get flipped as the descriptions start actually happening, crossing their fictional prank over into reality with the death of their friends.

The biggest problem is that the trailers don't really give us anything different from the plethora other teen slasher horror films, or as Roger Ebert calls them "Dead teenager movies." Teens running, teens screaming, "Look out behind you!" Been there done that. My hope is that when I do end up seeing the entire film, it surprises me with something a bit new. It doesn't need to be much, just a glimpse of originality will do, for now. I pray that it does not become Scream-redux. I don't like to think bad before a film, I want it to stand or fall on it's own accord, so I will refrain from too many bad thoughts.

It was directed by Jeff Wadlow, a name I have never heard before, but has apparently directed a few award winning short films. Now he is making the jump to the big screen with his first feature. There are even a few recognizable names in the cast, including Jared Padalecki, Jon Bon Jovi, and Gary Cole.
