The box office continues to show less than stellar results. Whether this is a result of poor films, or preclusive cost, or the growth of home theater, or some other reason is up for debate. Whatever the case, people aren't packing the multiplexes like they have in the past. This week's top film is the video game adaptation, Doom. I was one of those who took this in over the past weekend, and found it to be fun, strictly B level, but fun. It was actually better than I expected. I like The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) as an action star, and I really hope that he catches on. He has great screen presence, good line delivery, an imposing size, and has shown willingness to take on different roles in his young career.
Also making their first appearances are two more new releases. The first is the number 2 film, Dreamer. It looks to be a delightful family film. The other is North Country, the Oscar hopeful came in a disappointing 5th. There was one other new release, which I also saw, that failed to crack the top 10, Stay. It is a twisted little mindtrip of a movie.
Despite the overall poor performance of the box office, there are three films which were able to hold on to respectable portions of their audience. Those films were Wallace & Gromit in Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Flightplan, and A History of Violence.
That does it until next week which features the sadistic sequel, Saw II.
