New Movie Releases for 12/16/05: Featuring King Kong

This week features two new national releases. Let us dispense with the opening monologue, which I know none of you read anyway, and get right to the releases.

The Family Stone. This is a new romantic comedy starring Diane Keaton, Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Rachel McAdams. It looks like it could be pretty funny, although nothing terribly special. Mulroney brings his fiancée home to meet his family, unfortunately, their reaction is less than welcoming. That is the setup for the comedy. This will live or die based on the strength of the cast.

King Kong. Peter Jackson follows up his epic trilogy, with a new epic. King Kong is the one film that Jackson credits most, he absolutely loves it. This new vision clocks in at over 3 hours, and, according to most critics, is worth every minute. Jackson has collected a cast including Naomi Watts, Jack Black, and Adrien Brody, in addition to the giant ape of the title. Everything I have seen about the film looks great, I cannot wait to see it!

Paradise Now. This is opening at the local art house. The movie tells the tale of a couple of young Palestinian men who have fun, while living a modest lifestyle repairing cars. All is going well, until they receive the call for martyrdom. Follow them through their preparations. This could prove to be very interesting.

Also opening this week, but not near me:
  • 3 Burials of Melquiades Estrada
  • The Big White
  • Bluffmaster
  • Hoodwinked
  • The Producers
