Many moons ago I read about a film that would team Jack Black (School of Rock) with director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite). I then went on to read that the plot centered on a Mexican priest who performed as a masked lucha libre wrestler at night, in order to raise money for an orphanage. Then I read that was actually made and the trailer was here. The movie? Nacho Libre of course!
The story seems like such an out there proposition, I really did not think it was true. Even with the trailer staring me in the face I find it slightly unbelievable. I have to say, this looks like it could be a riotously bizarre film, just take a look at the trailers!
Being a wrestling fan, I was wondering how the wrestling would look. After seeing the trailer I am still curious, but my cringe worthy thoughts have been slightly lessened, as the brief clips looked OK, plus I had read somewhere that Black received actual training as a wrestler.
The trailers spotlight the off-kilter humor that was the trademark of Hess' Napoleon Dynamite, but embodying that humor in the physique of the maniacal Jack Black, who looks great for the part. The film also looks like it is going to have a very divisive reception. I can see those who will love it, and those who right it off as dumb. I am hoping for the best, as I really like what I have seen in the trailers.
Will this be a hit? Will it be a bomb? Who knows? I don't really care, as I have a feeling that I am going to like it.
