New Movies and Box Office Predictions: Featuring Scary Movie 4

First let me wish you all a Happy Easter! Hopefully, you will enjoy with a movie or three. This week sees two films are opening wide this week, and third expanding. The two new wide films both fall under the comedy banner, one for the kiddies, and one for the teens. The third film is a wonderfully witty satire about a certain tobacco lobbyist. Let's move on and take a look at the releases.

Scary Movie 4. (2006, 90 minutes, PG-13, comedy, trailer) The fourth movie in this spoof series is set to descend upon us. Will it be good or bad? If I had to guess, based on the last 2 entries, it is going to be awful. Part 2 was bad, Part 3 was atrocious. Whether this continue the pattern that has been set, or buck the trend has yet to be seen. I will admit, the trailers look pretty darn funny. Among the movies targets are War of the Worlds, Saw, The Village, and The Grudge, plus the ubquitous iPod and Tom Cruise on Oprah. Director David Zucker returns to the chair following his work on Part 3, he has also directed The Naked Gun and Airplane. Anna Farris also returns to star, alongside Regina Hall, Craig Bierko, and Simon Rex.

The Wild. (2006, 94 minutes, G, animated comedy, trailer) This could also have been called Madagascar 2, it looks to be the exact same movie. That earlier film wasn't all that great, it was harmless little film that did nothing to advance the genre, but it wasn't nearly as bad as, say, Valiant or Doogal. It is the story of a NYC zoo which is inhabited by a group of chummy animals. When one of them gets out, the rest must venture out to find him. I have heard that it is better in every way from that earlier flick, which could mean that this may well be worth seeing. In any case, I am sure it will be box office gold, and succeed in unseating Ice Age: The Meltdown. Voice talent includes Eddie Izzard, Kiefer Sutherland, and Jim Belushi.

L'Enfant. (2006, 95 minutes, NR, drama, trailer) This film from Belgium is starting a run at the local arthouse. This is the story of a young couple coming to terms with the impending responsibilities of adulthood. A young mother and deadbeat father are living on whatever they can scrounge, or steal, until the father attempts to sell the baby. This film was the winner of the Palme D’Or, the biggest honor at the Cannes Film Festival.

Young, Jewish and Left. (2006, 70 minutes, NR, documentary, trailer) This is having its world premiere at the local arthouse. It will have a single showing, with the directors in attendance. The film is a mix of interviews and archival footage, weaved together. As described at the Upstate Films website: "Giving voice to marginalized people—those who are transgender, women, queer or Arab—the film finds a common thread for a radical Jewish community based on inclusion, progressive politics, and a drive for justice."

Also opening this week, but not near me:
  • Hard Candy
  • Humko Deewana Kar Gaye
  • Kinky Boots
  • La Mujer de mi Hermano
  • Look Both Ways
  • Mountain Patrol: Kekexili
  • Mozart and the Whale
  • My First Wedding
  • The Notorious Bettie Page
  • Preaching to the Choir
  • The Sisters

Box office Predictions:

  1. The Wild. I'm not sure there is any doubt that this will take the top spot. Could be a close race, being a holiday weekend, box office take will probably be on the soft side.
  2. Scary Movie 4. These movies are gold, so despite its quality, or lack thereof, people will be there ti see it.
  3. Ice Age: The Meltdown. This could potentially be higher, based on the previous weeks, this will bring in some decent change.
  4. The Benchwarmers. This one is a bit more a crapshoot. It could fall off quickly.
  5. Take the Lead. After a lukewarm reception last week, how will this do?
  6. Inside Man. Spike Lee's film has the star power to carry it for another week or two.
  7. Failure to Launch. Doing surprisingly well, is the beginning of the slide?
  8. Thank You for Smoking. It cracked the top 10 last week, this week it goes wide. It should move up a bit this week. It is very funny and well worth seeing.
  9. Lucky Number Slevin. I have a feeling this will fade pretty quick, despite it being something worth seeing.
  10. V for Vendetta. This will be the final appearance for this piece of excellence.

What are you seeing this weekend?
