The next two spots were filled by the only two new releases to crack into the top ten. First up is Crank which was pretty much in line with the predictions I had read. I had hoped that it would take the top spot, but that was not to be. It is a delightfully frenetic action film which is firmly in the R rated camp for violence and language. Right behind it is surreal horror remake The Wicker Man. I saw the film, and while there were things to like about it was much to superficial in execution. Still, it was nice to see something that was rather bizarre to hit the screens, and had no jump scares.
The Illusionist jumped into the top ten, moving up to 5 from 14 as the film goes into a wider release. I have not yet seen it, which is something I plan to rectify in the near future. The film has a good cast, and I like the look, although I think that it will pale next to The Prestige as far as magic films go, when it opens later in the Fall.
Of the returning films, Little Miss Sunshine continues to impress. It may have fallen a spot in the rankings, but it increased its take, which is a good thing to see. Seeing good word of mouth at work around a film that deserves it is a thing of beauty. On the flip side, Barnyard gained three places on the charts while seeing its box office take slip a little bit.
On the whole, the box office did not slip all that much between last week and this week. We shall see how long that lasts.
Two films dropped from the list this week: Beerfest (13) and Idlewild (16).
