New Movies and Box Office Predictions: Fracture, In the Land of Women, Vacancy

This week sees a couple of critical heavyweights enter the fray. Anthony Hopkins has a new thriller out, while Richard Gere has a new comedy, both of which are vying for your cinematic dollar. Possibly more intriguing is a new horror film starring the unlikely visage of Luke Wilson, could be fun, or maybe, well, not so. Each of the new four films will be competing with last week's winner, Disturbia, for the coveted box office crown. Who do you think has the goods to go all the way?

Fracture. (2007, 112 minutes, R, thriller, trailer) Academy award winner Anthony Hopkins is paired with up and coming, and Academy award nominated, Ryan Gosling in this legal thriller. I have to say that it looks pretty good. Hopkins is in full on creepy mode, and Gosling is really becoming a man to watch. Hopkins plays a man who is believed to have murdered his wife, while Gosling is the DA who becomes involved in a game of cat and mouse when the case turns south. It was directed by Gregory Hoblit, who also directed Hart's War and Primal Fear.

In the Land of Women. (2007, 100 minutes, PG-13, romantic comedy, trailer) Hmmm, not sure about this one. I have a feeling it will fail to have much impact on the box office, as the advertising seems to be on the light side. It stars Adam Brody as the recently dumped who seeks new surroundings by moving to take care of his sick grandmother. It is here that his life takes an unexpected turn as he becomes involved with the women across the street, namely Meg Ryan and Kristen Stewart. This is the directorial debut for actor turned director Jon Kasdan, son of Lawrence Kasdan (Dreamcatcher, The Big Chill).

Vacancy. (2007, 85 minutes, R, horror, trailer) Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale take a wrong turn, their car breaks down, and then end up at a rundown hotel. The rooms come complete with video tapes of the brutal murders that have taken place in them. Now, the two have to find a way to escape with their lives. This looks like it could be little bit of fun. It is described in the ads as Psycho meets Saw, interesting combination. It was directed by Nimrod Antal, and written by Mark L. Smith, who also has his directorial debut hitting theaters this year, Seance.

The Hoax. (2007, 129 minutes, R, comedy, trailer) Based on a true story, Richard Gere plays an author who lies himself into a bundle of money by selling a fictitious biography of Howard Hughes to a publishing house. The trailer looks pretty funny as the lies escalate to cover the first lies and he tries to stay one step ahead of everyone else. Actually, it sort of sounds like Catch Me if You Can. Lasse Hallstrom, who also directed Casanova and Chocolat, was in the chair for this one.

The Host. (2006, 119 minutes, R, horror, trailer, in Korean with English subtitles) I have been wanting to see this for awhile now. It is a new monster movie hailing from Korea. A monster born of formaldahyde emerges from the Han River to wreak havok on everyone within sight. A young girl is abducted by the creature and taken to its sewer lair. There the child waits as her family, each with their own issue, bands together to go and rescue her. I hear it is scary and funny and a great monster flick. This was directed by Memories of Murder helmer Joon-ho Bong.

Also opening this week, but not near me:
  • Hot Fuzz
  • Downtown a Street Tale
  • Smiley Face
  • Stephanie Daley
  • The Tripper
  • The Valet

Box Office Predictions
Last week had the Rear Window redux take solid control over the to ten. Will it be able to repeat this week? I find the prospect doubtful, the Hopkins/Gosling thriller will step up and take control of a slightly slow weekend. We are in a bit of a lull leading up to the release of Spider-Man 3 in two weeks. Also looking to have a decent opening is the Luke Wilson/Kate Beckinsale horror/thriller, Vacancy. I think it will open well then slip off. Unfortunately, the one movie that I really want to see this weekend is Hot Fuzz, hopefully it will do well and get a bit of a wider release. As for the returning films, Disturbia will do decently, but the story will be Wild Hogs which I believe has one more week in the top ten left in it.

Here is how I think the top ten field will play out:

RankTitleBox Office
1Fracture$18 million
2Vacancy$15 million
3Disturbia$14 million
4Blades of Glory$8 million
5

Meet the Robinsons

$6.5 million
6The Hoax

$5 million

7Perfect Stranger$4.5 million
8Hot Fuzz$4 million
9Are We Done Yet?$3.5 million
10Wild Hogs$2 million

What are you seeing this weekend?
