This frame last year saw The Covenant open at the top with a total tally that fell short of the $9 million mark. By comparison, this weekend saw two films finish higher than that. I guess that would have to speak towards a stronger class of debuts, led by 3:10 to Yuma. Not to mention the strong opening of Halloween last weekend led to a higher tally in the second weekend. Even with the generally poor word of mouth there are bound to be a good number of curious horror fans that wished to subject themselves to Rob Zombie's reimagining of the horror classic.
That brings me to the number two film of the weekend and the second remake on the list. Rob Zombie's Halloween opened to a Labor Day record last weekend, finishing north of $30 million. That total was a first for the weekend. Its second frame saw a considerable drop of 64%, though it still managed to pull decent numbers. I, for one, actually liked the film. No, it does not equal the original, but not many films can touch Carpenter's original slasher.
Aside from 3:10 to Yuma, there was one other film making its debut this weekend. The film is a live action cartoon with a plethora of guns, bullets, and anonymous bad guys to blast. Shoot 'Em Up failed to make much of a splash as it finished sixth on the list. I saw it and have to say that it was an absolute blast. If you are looking for an over-the-top action film with little in the way of plot or characters, this is for you. I swear I had a grin plastered across my face for the entire run of the film. A definite guilty pleasure.
Oh yes, there is one other remake on the list. Making a return to the top ten in its eigth week of release, Hairspray continues to lure in the crowds. It is a remake of the John Waters film from the 80's, or rather it is the movie version of the musical which was inspired by the original film. Phew.
Next week will see new competition from Jodi Foster's The Brave One, the Korean import Dragon Wars, and Mr. Woodcock featuring Seann William Scott and Billy Bob Thornton.
Three movies dropped off the top ten this week: Stardust (11), Death Sentence (12), and War(13).

Box Office Predictions Recap
Talk about your sloppy guesses! I was only able to get one of the top ten films placed correctly, while only one of my box office guesstimates was in the ballpark. To top that off, they weren't the same movie! Well, we are moving back into that time of year when the placings get a little trickier. The totals will drop and, at times, it will be a little tougher to guess. I will continue to plug away and make the attempt to adjust to the changing seasons.
