Leatherheads. (2008, 114 minutes, PG-13, comedy, trailer) What better way is there to welcome a young baseball season than with a football movie? Sounds like a perfect match. Anyway, this is the latest directorial effort from George Clooney, his first since 2005's Oscar nominated Good Night and Good Luck. This film is set during the mid 1920's with professional football a struggling proposition looking for respect. Clooney plays a star footballer who, in an effort to gain credibility, lures a top college star and war hero, played by The Office's John Krasinski, to play for his team. Along the way is a female reporter (Renee Zellweger) digging for the truth and the point of a love triangle. I have to say that the trailers look like fun, a funny period piece with top tier star power mixed with some up and coming young blood. I am looking forward to giving it a look see.
Nim's Island. (2008, 95 minutes, PG, comedy, trailer) This family friendly adventure looks like it could provide some magic for the young ones, but seems a bit more questionable of a proposition. The story centers on a young girl named Nim (Abigail Breslin) who lives on a magical island surrounded by all manner of animals where she idolizes a literary adventurer. When her father (300's Gerard Butler) goes missing, Nim finds herself getting help from Alexandra (Jodie Foster), the author of Rover's adventures. I am sure the kids will get a kick out of this one. The film is directed by the pair of Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin.
The Ruins. (2008, 97 minutes, R, horror, trailer) I have to say that when I saw the first trailer I was not terribly impressed, but the more I see, which isn't much, I admit that it is growing on me. I am really looking forward to giving this a shot. It would be nice to see an effective horror film hit the big screen. The film follows a group of young adults on a South American vacation who learn the true meaning of terror while exploring some of the local ruins, uncovering something alive. The cast is made up of relative unknowns, the most recognizable being Jena Malone (Into the Wild) and Shawn Ashmore (X-Men 3: The Last Stand). Also in the cast are Jonathan Tucker, Laura Ramsey, and Joe Anderson. The film is directed by fist timer Carter Smith based on a script by Scott B. Smith (Oscar nominee for A Simple Plan), who also penned the novel.

Box Office Predictions
21 pulled out something of a surprise last week as it took the top spot with near $25 million. I believe it is highly unlikely that it will see a second week in that position. I believe the star power of Leatherheads will put it over the top and drive it to the number 1 slot. Nim's Island should also do well, drawing from the family demographic. The rest of the chart is anyone's ballgame, with most likely to do decent business to follow up last week's performances.
Here is how I think the top ten field will play out:
Rank | Title | Box Office |
1 | Leatherheads | $20 million |
2 | Nim's Island | $17 million |
3 | 21 | $14 million |
4 | Horton Hears a Who! | $11 million |
5 | The Ruins | $10 million |
6 | Superhero Movie | $5 million |
7 | Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns | $5 million |
8 | Drillbit Taylor | $3 million |
9 | Stop-Loss | $2.5 million |
10 | Shutter | $2 million |
