City of Ember is a new fantasy film from director Gil Kenan, jumping to live action after his impressive debut with Monster House. It is a fantasy based off the novel by Jeanne Duprau, the screenplay adaptation is from Caroline Thompson, who has also worked on The Secret Garden, as well as a number of Tim Burton films, including Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Corpse Bride. Not a bad resume from the creative team if you ask me. Now, if you look onscreen, you will be sure to recognize a few faces, including Bill Murray, Tim Robbins, Martin Landau, and Saoirse Ronan (who made a splash last year in Atonement). As for the story? It does look intriguing, with a steampunk-like setting, the city of the title. This city has existed for generations, powered by a mysterious generator, however, the generator is failing and it is up to a pair of teenagers to discover the secrets behind the generator and save the city.
