Hancock. (2008, 92 minutes, PG-13, action, trailer) Will Smith makes his return to the holiday he made famous, rather, the holiday that has seen him have an impressive string of hits. Will Hancock be another notch on the belt? Something tells me the answer will be yes. The bigger question, the more important question, is whether or not this is going to be a good movie. I have avoided reading any reviews, but the consensus I have gathered through other means is that it is not that good. Also, it is a "hard" PG-13, with many saying this was clearly meant to be an R-rated film, so those with little ones may want to investigate first. Smith stars as Hancock, a mean spirited drunken "superhero" who does "good" things with little thought to the repercussions of his methods. The trailers look good, and I will remain optimistic until I see it. Joining Smith are Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron, working under the direction of Peter Berg.
Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. (2008, 91 minutes, G, comedy, trailer) When I first saw the trailer for this film (and I think I only saw it the one time), I was reminded of last year's Nancy Drew. The two films seem to have similar adventurous tone with comedic undercurrents, while targeting the family and young girl audience. I can also say that I did not have much interest in it, that is until I saw that it was getting good notices from critics like Roger Ebert (whose work I love). So, perhaps I will give this a shot and hope for the best. Abigail Breslin stars as the title character, a young girl who has a big heart and shows it in a variety of ways. In this case, she helps a couple of hobos who become the target of a burglary investigation. It is up to Kit to try and help, while also coping with her father's loss of work and the danger of losing their home. Chris O'Donnell, Julia Ormond, Wallace Shawn, and Joan Cusack co-star.

This weekend should feature some strong totals, it doesn't hurt that Friday is Independence Day and many families will be doing things together, and with the cost of gas, many will not likely be making long trips. So, what is a family to do together that doesn't involve long trips? Why go to the movies, of course! Hancock will undoubtedly take the top spot, which likely be pretty big. the rest of the field is pretty open, although I suspect that Wall*E will do big numbers in its second weekend (this comes highly recommended by yours truly). It will be interesting to see how it will play out.
