I loved this movie when I was a kid. It was, essentially, an Americanized look at old school kung fu flicks. It spawned a pair of sequels followed by a reimagining with Hilary Swank taking over the Ralph Macchio role. I guess it was just a matter of time before Hollywood's penchant for attempting to remake past hits for current profit.
ComingSoon.net is reporting that Jaden Smith, son of Will and Jada, will be playing the lead role. Filming of the Chris Murphy penned script is set to begin next year in Beijing. Yes, the setting has changed, but the film will retain the core of a bullied kid being taught self defense by an eccentric.
At this point no director has been announced nor has any other cast been announced. Something tells me that the Mr. Miyagi role, played so memorably by the late Pat Morita, will go to someone like Chow Yun Fat or Ken Watanabe. Time will tell if this will actually work or not.
