This week's wide releases -Cop Out
The Crazies
There was only one film in wide release last week, the fantastic Shutter Island. This week we get two and they target different audiences. While Shutter Island boasts Martin Scorsese and Leonardo Dicaprio in a mind bending thriller this weeks releases feature a foul-mouthed buddy cop comedy and a remake of a low-budget horror film from the early 1970s. Clearly neither film has pedigree to match last week. Do either interet you?
Cop Out. (2010, 110 minutes, R, comedy) So, has Kevin Smith gone legit? His latest film is not an indie, it stars a couple of big names, he didn't write the screenplay, and it actually looks like the camera might actually move! The film, written by the brothers Robb and Mark Cullen (television's Las Vegas), tells the story of a veteran detective (Bruce Willis) tracking down a very valuable stolen baseball card which is now in the possession of a gangster. He does this while trying to keep is partner (Tracy Morgan) in check. Not that you would know this from any of the trailers, which seem to stray from showing any story elements. I am quite interested in seeng how this turns out. I never thought I would see a Smith film that he did not write. I also kind of wish they had been able to keep the original title, A Couple of Dicks. Now, if you want to know more about the film or at least from someone with a grudge against the film maker for some reason, check out Rex Reed's review. Better yet, maybe you shouldn't whatever he has might be catching.
The Crazies. (2010, 101 minutes, R, horror) Five years after George Romero redefined the zombie and five years before he gave them their defining moment, he made a non-zombie film that preyed on the paranoid as an virus infects a small town, turning them into crazy murderers. The government steps in and tries to keep a lid on the situation. This remake seems to slow things down a bit and makes the infected a bit crazier. If nothing else, this should bring the story some higher production values. Breck Eisner (Sahara) is behind the camera for stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson, and Danielle Panabaker.

I suspect that Shutter Island is going to be able to retain the top spot and be the first 2010 film to do so and the first to do it since Avatar was deposed. As for this weeks new releases, they will do well, but be a bit more modest in their take. All that while Avatar continues to put people in the seats and passes the $700 million mark. The rest will be a toss up, although I suspect Valentine's Day is in for another big dip.
