Green Zone
Our Family Wedding
Remember Me
She's Out of My League
Could last week's blockbuster opening of Alice in Wonderland signal a new early start to the blockbuster season? Not likely. It is more like an aberration based on expectations. However, it is is still proof that you can open a huge move out of the summer and Christas seasons. Perhaps this will help unbunch the big releases that get rammed down our throats week after week through the summer. In any case, there are four new films opening this weekend that target a few different demographics. In short, there is no reason for you not to get out and check something.
Green Zone. (2010, 115 minutes, R, action/thriller) No, it is not a new Bourne film but it does share star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass. I am sure it will also feature intimate, close up fights, frenetic action, and some of the shakiest camera work known to man. I am looking forward to it. Damon plays an operative working with inspectors in Iraq looking for weapons of mass destruction. The problem is that every site they go to is empty. Damon discovers lies on both sides and must ty to find out the truth about who is covering up what and why.
Our Family Wedding. (2010, 90 minutes, PG-13, comedy) This comedy has a couple that is preparing to be married, America Ferrera and Luke Goss, at its center but they are not the whole story, merely the vehicles. The main story is the one that exists between their headstrong fathers played by Forest Whitaker and Carlos Mencia. Can they put their differences aside to put on the wedding their children deserve? Something tells me they will, but not without comedic results.
Remember Me. (2010, 113 minutes, PG-13, romantic drama) Robert Pattinson steps out from the glitter makeup to play, well, Robert Pattinson. At least that is what I gather from the trailer as his character seems very similar to what we have seen before. If he is not careful he is going to get typecast. He costars with Emilie de Ravin in a romance that is burdened by Pattinson's father issues and a tragedy in his past. I am not so sure I am interested in this and the word has so far been mixed. Has anyone seen it yet?
Shes Out of My League (2010, 104 minutes, R, comedy) Will this movie be funny? I am betting that it will be. Will it be good? I am not quite so sure. Jay Baruchel stars as an employee at an airport who happens upon the cellphone of a beautiful young woman who takes him out as a reward. What follows is an unlikely and comical romance that would never happen in the real world. I think I'm going to like this one.
Also opening this week, but not near me:
- Children of Invention
- The Exploding Girl
- Mother
- Stolen
- Tales from the Script
Last week I was just a little bit off with regards to the gigantic opening of Alice in Wonderland. Seriously, who would have suspected such an enormous hit? Will it hold up this weekend? It will surely be number one again, but how far will it drop? For that matter, will any of the new releases step up? We shall see, we shall see.
Here is how I think it could play out:
Rank | Title | Box Office |
1 | Alice in Wonderland (2010) | $54 million |
2 | Green Zone | $22 million |
3 | She's Out of My League | $16 million |
4 | Remember Me | $11 million |
5 | Shutter Island | $8 million |
6 | Our Family Wedding | $7 million |
7 | Avatar | $5 million |
8 | Cop Out | $4.5 million |
9 | Percy Jacksom | $3 million |
10 | The Crazies | $3 million |
