The Runaways
Alice in Wonderland has been outdoing everyone's expectations, will it continue to do so in its third weekend? Who knows, but there is no reason to believe it will not. The weekday numbers have been pretty strong as well. I suspect it will be a close finish at the top, as opposed to the last couple of weeks. This week will see four new films enter the fray, with one of looking a potential top spot stealer.
The Bounty Hunter. (2010, 106 minutes, PG-13, romantic comedy) Whenever my mom sees a commercial for this film, she invariably comments on how stupid it looks. I tend to agree, but have a slightly sunnier outlook of the prospect. Sure, it looks stupid, but stupid can be fun and Jennifer Aniston is looking pretty good and the ladies seem to like Gerard Butler, so it could be a win win. The premise is simple enough, Aniston has jumped bail and Butler is a bounty hunter ex-cop who is set to track her down. Things are complicated by the fact that he is also her ex-beau. To further complicate things, she is a reporter about to blow the lid on something big and the subjects do not want that to happen. No, I am not expecting anything great, but it looks like an entertaining enough diversion.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid. (2010, 120 minutes, PG, comedy) Based on a series of books, this follows the life of a wisecracking young boy over the course of a school year. I have not seen much in the way of advertising for it. Of course, I figure this is being advertised on programs I do not watch. In any case, the buzz seems to be high among the younger set, although I do not see this making a big splash.
Repo Men. (2010, 111 minutes, R, sci-fi action) I am sorry, but I cannot help but think of Repo! The Genetic Opera directed by Darren Bousman. The two films have similar premises, although Bousman's film has the added bonus of singing! Anyway, this film is set in the future and there is a company that markets replacement body parts for exorbitant prices. So long as you make the payments you are fine, but fall behind and the part will be repossessed. Jude Law and Forest Whitaker are repo men and longtime friends. Problems arise when Law gets a new heart and goes on the run for lack of payment. I expect this to be fun. I hope.
The Runaways. (2010, 105 minutes, R, drama) Lately I have been feeling a little nonplussed when it comes to biopics. This, however, could be different. I don't know why or what, but I have a hope. It is the story of the female punk rock band the Runways, a band that paved the road for generations of female rockers. The band was formed by Joan Jett and Cherie Currie and they went a lot farther than anyone would have anicioated. The .film stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. Here's hoping!

Tim Burton's vision of Alice in Wonderland has dominated for its first two weekends. Will it be able to hold on for a third? Sure, why not? It will end up being closer than the prior two, although I am beginning to think it will not be as close as I initially was thinking. Of the new releases, I am sure The Bounty Hunter will be the biggest of the bunch, quality aside.
