Jonah Hex
Toy Story 3
Where last weekend brought us a remake and a television adaptation, this week gives us a comic adaptation and a sequel. Makes you wonder where the original features are. Well, I know one that is entering limited release this weekend, Cyrus with Jonah Hill, John C. Reilly, and Marisa Tomei. Hopefully it will do well enough to widen. In any case, last weekend brought a surprise hit in The Karate Kid (yes, it really is quite good). Will this week deliver the same type of surprise? I would tend to doubt it as one of these new releases is a surefire hit.
Jonah Hex. (2010, 80 minutes, PG-13, action/western) One thing I keep hearing about this movie is that it is short and at 80-minutes it is hard to dispute that fact. Subtract the opening (presuming it has them) and closing credits, you could have a feature in the vicinity of 70-minutes. Wow, that is short. Anyway, this is an adaptation of the Jonah Hex comic character, a western/action/comedy hybrid that looks like it could be fun. Josh Brolin plays the lead role and looks like he is having some fun with role. On the other hand Megan Fox plays opposite him and is as lacking in charisma as ever. The trailer has given me two thoughts, on one hand it looks to be a fun B action film with plenty of bullets and explosions. The other thought is that it is too overloaded with one-liners and there is a lack of substance. I'm still interested in seeing if Hex can get his revenge. You see, his family was killed and his face badly burned, now endowed with supernatural abilities. Hoping for the best.
Toy Story 3. (2010, 92 minutes, G, animated/comedy) The only Pixar film to ever get a sequel (so far) now has a second. What else do you need to know other than this is a new Pixar movie? Seriously, they have not made a bad movie yet (of course some are better than others). This new film reunites Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang as Andy heads of to college. The toy collection ends up at a nursery school and they must find a way to get out and back to Andy. Everyone, no matter how old, needs their favorite toys. The early word is that this is another winner. I am looking forward to seeing this one, seeing the recent 3D re-releases has fed my appetite for more.
Also opening this week, but not near me:
- 8: The Mormon Proposition
- Cyrus
- I Am Love
- The Killer Inside Me
- Let it Rain
- The Nature of Existence
- Raaven
- Stonewall Uprising
I was surprised by the success of The Karate Kid last week, underestimating it on both sides of the chart. After seeing the movie, I am glad for it as it proved to be really quite good. Something tells me we are not going to get a surprise like that this week. It is a foregone conclusion that Toy Story 3 is going to top the chart. I think what will be more interesting is how Jonah Hex fares. I have a feeling not well.
Here is how I think it could play out:
Rank | Title | Box Office |
1 | Toy Story 3 | $110 million |
2 | The Karate Kid (2010) | $28 million |
3 | The A-Team (2010) | $14 million |
4 | Jonah Hex | $11 million |
5 | Shrek Forever After | $8 million |
6 | Get Him to the Greek | $5 million |
7 | Killers | $4 million |
8 | Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time | $3.25 million |
9 | Sex and the City 2 | $3 million |
10 | Marmaduke | $2.5 million |
