Stop Complaining About Original Films if You Don't Go See Them

It seems like very few days go by that I do not come across someone lamenting the lack of original films in theaters. People complain and cry about the sequels, remakes, and been there done that familiarity of a good chunk of Hollywood releases. Then along comes a movie that is wildly imaginative, filled with interesting characters, and is down right entertaining and it struggles to place fifth its opening weekend while a big by the numbers action film grosses more than three times as much.



I am talking about Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and The Expendables. Both films hotly anticipated by yours truly, but it is clear which one was going to be the better film. While the Stallone film was very entertaining, it is not destined to be remembered. Well, set that aside.

The main point I am trying to make is that Scott Pilgrim is an amazingly original film that tells an interesting story with interesting characters and has a delightful wit and visual style. Edgar Wright really knocks this one out of the park and the people didn't come out. This is originality that should be celebrated, praised, and seen on the big screen.

Think about this, the movie is all about finding where you are supposed to be, the mistakes of youth, and dealing with the baggage that comes with it. This seemingly simple tale is enhanced in quirky and surreal ways that externalize the baggage. Now, take that and steep it in indie rock and 8-bit video games. It is like candy for the eyes while offering actual substance at the same time.

What are you waiting for? Stop complaining about the lack of originality if you aren't going to support it when it steps up and smacks you in the face.
