Horror-A-Day: Leprechaun in the Hood

Sometimes when I look for a movie to watch I make rash, uninformed decisions that ultimately do not do me any favors. Such goes my choice from the other night. It was late and I was looking for a light horror movie that I could essentially tune out to while watching. Well, I know I have made some bad choices already this month, and this turned out to e another one. Fortunately, there is still a lot of October left to get things back on track. However, knowing me, I will surely make a few more bad choices down the line.



The movie is the fifth in the Leprechaun franchise, after they took him to space, they brought him back and put him in the hood in the aptly titled Leprechaun in the Hood. I am pretty sure there is no continuity from movie to movie, as I do not recall how the fourth film ended, but  am pretty sure it wasn't by dropping him into the hood. In any case, this movie is a super low budget affair that is not really all that good and definitely not as good as the original.

This one opens with Ice-T, playing Mack Daddy, discovering the Leprechaun's gold. He also finds a way of neutralizing the little green fellow with a necklace that turns him from a little trouble maker into an ugly statue. Years later we catch up with Mack, now a music producer, financing his work with the little guy's gold. He is approached by a group of young up and comers for money and when Mack backs out the deal, they break into his office and rob him, including the necklace on the ugly little leprechaun statue. This is no good as he newly reanimated creature heads out to reclaim his gold and his magical flute, which was among the things stolen.

Now, here is something to think about. If Mack Daddy new that the necklace keeps the Leprechaun in check, don't you think he would have put the thing in a more secure location than just an office decoration? I think he was asking for everything he gets.

Well, the Leprechaun hits out against the young would be rappers death ensues. When the end arrives, do you think they will have found a way to stop the Leprechaun, or does the Leprechaun get over on them being thieves in the first place? To add another entertaining level, the main guy calls himself Postmaster P, with the P standing for positivity. The guy wants to spread a good message but goes along with the robbery. Nice.

Really though, I don't want to write about this one anymore. It is not that much fun, the blood is not all that plentiful, and the rappers are really not good. The best thing about this movie is Warwick Davis. There is something entertaining about his maniacal persona. Sure, the movie, or series for that matter, never takes itself too seriously, but that doesn't mean it can't be good. The only thing you really need to see is the Leprechaun's rap at the end of the movie.

There are much better bad horror movies to waste your time with.
