Snowpiercer. This is one of my favorite films of 2014 and it has landed on Netflix pretty quick, so I encourage everyone to take advantage of this and check out thei science fiction/action movie. It is the English language debut for Korean director Bong Joon Ho and it is a fantastic slice of social commentary and sci fi world building with interesting characters and solid action. Chris Evans leads the cast in this story of the future where all that is left of humanity is on a train that circumnavigates the world.
Night of the Demons 2. Man, it has been ages since I have seen this movie. The original is a classic of 80's horror. This sequel sees Angela return to wreak havok at a Halloween party. I really cannot remember if this was any good or not, but I have to imagine it would at least be a little bit of fun.
Arachnophobia. I have never liked spiders. They can be cool to watch on TV or something, but when it comes to sharing personal space, no way. Kill them. Kill them with fire. This comedic horror film was always enjoyable, if not a bit spine chilling, in an uncontrollable shudder sort of way. It is another one I have not seen in a long time, so it was nice to see it pop up here.
Battle Royale. Picture a future where adults have lost faith in children and a law is passed where a class may be kidnapped and forced to kill each other in a battle to the death to try and keep the rest of the youth in line. You may be picturing the world of Battle Royale. Directed by Kinji Fukasaku, this movie has definitely left a mark and is definitely worth your time.
Infernal Affairs. This Hong Kong action thriller was the inspiration for Martin Scorsese's The Departed. It is a very good film, a cat and mouse thriller where a cop and a criminal are deep undercover on the opposite side and both know there are leaks, but do not know the identity of the other. This is a really good film.
Star Trek VI: Undiscovered Country. One of my favorite Star Trek films, this sixth outing finds progressing peace talks between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, but an attack on the Klingon representative lands Kirk and McCoy in a prison colony and Spock is left to uncover the truth. This is a solid film and is very entertaining.
The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi. Here is a character that has existed for a long time. There was a long running series of films centering on Zatoichi back in the 1960's. The character was a swordsman, a blind one, who would travel the countryside helping people. This film resurrects the character with Takeshi Kitano, and it is a really good film and sports a great score.
The 'burbs. It is hard not to like this movie. It has a great cast with Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Cory Feldman, Courtney Gains, with cameos by Dick Miller and Robert Picardo. It is a fun tale of neighborhood paranoia.
Total Recall. You want some action and science fiction? This movie fits the bill and does it in fine fashion. Now, this is the original, not that terrible remake from a couple years back. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger and Paul Verhoeven doing what they do best. This is a movie that plays with reality and never gives you a definitive answer. This is a really good movie.
In A World... I found this to be interesting. It takes a look inside the world of trailer voice overs with an exploration of why women are not used as voice over artists. It is not terribly deep, but it is certainly worth spending some time with.
