I am pretty sure you are already tired of all the Star Wars stuff since the release of the new The Force Awakens teaser the other day, so, feel free to pass on this as it is not going to be objective and it is not going to be overly analytical. So what is this about? Well, it is just a moment for me to gush about the beauty of this teaser, the affect it had on me and my anticipation level. If you feel like that is up your alley, read on, otherwise, stick around and check out some of my reviews.
I thought I would wait until the day after, let it all sink in, well, as best as it can. Right up to the moment I pressed play on this trailer, my most anticipated movie of the year (at least the summer) was Mad Max: Fury Road. Everything about the new Max film looks great and brings back some great memories of Mad Max and The Road Warrior. It is made all the better that George Miller is at the helm. Well, those thoughts all ended as the Star Wars teaser unveiled its awesomeness upon me.
Star Wars means a lot to me. I love the films (even the prequels, to a lesser extent), I love the characters, the music, everything. I may not be a Star Wars scholar or well versed in the expanded universe (despite it being written out of canon), but do not doubt my dedication. I have a couple of Star Wars themed tattoos (including the Millennium Falcon on my calf), and have seen the films countless times. This trailer just brought all those feelings I had as a child.
It does appear to be a lot of fan service, but it really works for me. There is something about this that just feels right. I think, like the Godzilla trailer showing the monster, is a way of showing fans that this movie is not the prequels and the look and tone will be much more in line with the original trilogy.
The music, Luke's voice, the Millennium Falcon, lightsabers, R2-D2, Han and Chewie. Let me repeat that last bit, Han and Chewie. I swear, watching the trailer brought tears to my eyes, just thinking/talking/writing about it makes me all emotional, tears welling up in my eyes. It is a crazy reaction, but it just makes me rather emotional. I just cannot wait to see this movie now.
I think JJ Abrams is going about this the right way. He did a fine job with the two recent Star Trek films and appears to have the right sensibilities for the Star Wars franchise. If this trailer is any indication, we could be in for something special.
But, oh my.... that crashed Star Destroyer and X-Wing, Luke's old lightsaber, Vader's burned helmet, glimpse of new characters, the new TIE Fighter, the new Star Destroyer, then there is the tear triggering moment..... “Chewie, we're home.”
December 18, 2015 cannot come soon enough.
