There was a string of films to come out of France that sought to redefine brutality, intensity, and terror. These movies included High Tension, Frontier(s), Sheitan, and Martyrs. Each one was more intense than the one that preceded it. It was almost as if each successive filmmaker was attempting to outdo the one that came immediately before it. I am not sure if this trend continues but Martyrs was the epitome of the cycle that I saw, although there was one that I may have liked better. That movie was À l'intérieur (aka Inside). Of course, these movies would be targeted for an American remake. The trailer for Inside has arrived.
The movie does not look bad, but I question its ability to reach the levels of the original.
While the filmmakers of the original, Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, try their hand at adding to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre mythology, Spanish director Miguel Angel Vivas is looking to translate Inside. Vivas is an interesting director who I feel could bring something to the project. I have seen his 2010 feature, Kidnapped, and while it does not break any new ground, I quite liked it.
This remake stars Rachel Nichols (P2, Star Trek ‘09, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Pandemic) as a pregnant woman suffering through the last months of pregnancy after losing her husband in a car accident. She is stalked and tormented by Laura Harring (Mulholland Drive, The Punisher, Silent Night Deadly Night 3: You Better Watch Out). Also in the cast is Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Repo the Genetic Opera alum Anthony Stewart Head.
The original is an intense battle between the women, as one will stop at nothing to get the baby out of the other (she first attempts to cut the baby out with scissors). It is all pretty gruesome stuff. The movie was insanely bloody and creates a high level of tension. It will be interesting to see how close they get to the original, or if they go in another direction, if they put a new stamp on it.
